Swim at high tide, take the ferry across the Dart, walk a stretch of the coast path, eat plenty of seafood and get out on the water.

Our latest Postcards from Harth takes us to Dartmouth for a weekend, with our favourite places to swim, eat, drink and explore in and around the town. Save this one for your next trip to South Devon.

WHERE TO SWIM

Castle Cove for a high-tide dip is the locals' favourite. A little shingle cove tucked beneath Dartmouth Castle and a very good start to the day.

WHERE TO WALK

Take the ferry across to Kingswear for some of the best views back over Dartmouth, then pick up the South West Coastal Path and climb out of the village for big cliffside views over the Dart and out to sea. You don't need to go far to get the views.

WHERE TO GET COFFEE

Make a beeline for Woodroast, just back from the river, for very good coffee and cake.

WHERE TO EAT

The Seahorse is our top pick, founded by Mitch Tonks and now led by his son Ben, overlooking the Dart. Incredible seafood, delivered daily from Brixham and cooked over the charcoal fire.

We also loved The Crab Shell. It's been there for 35 years and does things in a pleasingly old-school way: fresh crab, prawn or smoked salmon sandwiches, made to order.

Rockfish was another highlight, both the restaurant, and for award-winning fish and chips by the water.

WHAT TO DO

Brand new, Knead Peace is a seriously good artisan bakery and baking school, with hands-on classes and workshops alongside sourdough, pastries and seasonal bakes. Also the team behind the Knead Peace cookbook, which brought together bakers from around the world to raise funds for the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

WHERE TO SHOP

Stock up on Harth, and many other delights, at The Deli at Dartmouth on Duke Street.

GET ON THE WATER

Take the boat up the Dart to Dittisham, stop at the Ferry Boat Innfor a drink or something to eat, then make your way back down the river. The journey itself if half the fun.
