There are some places that quietly work their way into your heart, calling you back time and time again, and for us, Portscatho is one of them. Tucked away on Cornwall's beautiful Roseland Peninsula, this charming coastal village has a slower pace of life that's impossible not to fall in love with. Here, the rhythm of each day is set by the tides, early morning swims are the perfect way to start the day, and the biggest decision you'll face is which stretch of the coast to explore next. Whether you're wandering along the South West Coast Path, discovering hidden coves, or simply soaking up the sea views, Portscatho has a way of making every visit feel both familiar and full of new discoveries.

Over the years, we've found ourselves returning to the places we love most while uncovering plenty of new favourites along the way. From secluded swimming spots and scenic walking routes to welcoming cafés, cosy pubs and must-visit local gems, we've gathered together our top recommendations to help you make the most of your time on the Roseland. Whether it's your first visit or you're returning for another stay, we hope this guide inspires you to experience Portscatho the way we do.

WHERE TO EAT

Plan for more than one visit to The Hidden Hut. It's that good. Simple, seasonal food cooked over fire and served with a view of the sea. For a pub lunch or supper, The Standard Inn at the top of the village is also excellent and run by the same team. And don’t miss Scatho’s gelato.

WHERE TO SWIM

Porthcurnick Beach, below The Hidden Hut, is our favourite swimming spot. For something even closer to home, swim out to the pontoon from Portscatho Beach, then warm up afterwards with a flask of hot chocolate.

WHERE TO WALK

The coastal paths in both directions from Portscatho have great views. Head towards Towan Beach, stopping for a swim along the way, before rewarding yourself with coffee and cake at the café above the beach. Or walk past The Hidden Hut towards Porthbean Beach, which often feels blissfully empty, even in summer. For bigger views, the walk around Anthony Head is hard to beat.

WHERE TO GET COFFEE

Tatams is such a good spot, perched above the slipway overlooking the harbour. The coffee is excellent, the pastries are worth arriving early for, and if you time it right, you can watch

the local gig rowing club out training in the bay.

WHAT TO DO

St Just in Roseland is a must. The church sits among subtropical gardens right on the water's edge, and the stained glass windows are beautiful. Inside we loved all the tapestry kneelers.

St Mawes is only a short drive away and makes a lovely day trip.

Pick up sandwiches from Mr Scorse Deli, wander the harbour, and if you're splashing out, book lunch at The Tresanton.

WHERE TO SHOP

Portscatho Stores is one of the best village shops we've come across, and nearby Pendower Farm Shop is worth a detour for excellent fruit and veg, plus locally landed fish and shellfish. For gifts and treats, don't miss Barefood & Wild.

WHERE TO STAY

There are plenty of lovely cottages to rent in and around the village. We stayed at Sunnyside, a modernised fisherman's cottage, and would happily return tomorrow.
